Announcing Special Initiative for Lincoln Interpretive Grants

CALENDAR of EVENTS of Lincoln programs in Kentucky.

 

Beginning in February 2008, the nation’s attention will focus on Kentucky, the birthplace and boyhood home of Abraham Lincoln. Celebrations will continue throughout the state leading up to the bicentennial of his birth on February 12, 2009.  The official public Bicentennial Commemoration launches February 2008 and closes February 2010, with the climax of the Commemoration taking place on February 12, 2009, the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. Across the country communities, organizations and individuals have already begun to plan parades, museum exhibitions, performances, art installations and much more.

 

The Kentucky Humanities Council Inc., through funding from the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, will provide financial support for nonprofit organizations across Kentucky to conceive and implement quality public humanities programs to celebrate Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln era in Kentucky, including the Underground Railroad and the Civil War.

We will begin accepting grant applications on July 1, 2006 and continue accepting applications until all grant funds have been expended.

The Humanities and Humanities Scholar:  We will fund projects that are rooted in the humanities disciplines: history, literature, folklore, philosophy, American Studies, linguistics, ethics, jurisprudence, political science, anthropology, comparative religion, archaeology, music and art interpretation, sociology and minority studies.  The active participation of a humanities scholar is an essential component of any KHC grant.  A humanities scholar has particular professional training or experience in one or more disciplines of the humanities.  In most cases the scholar will hold an advance degree in a humanities discipline and/or teach at a college or university.

 

Who may Apply for a KHC grant:  Nonprofit organizations, institutions, and groups, which are not required to be incorporated or tax-exempt may apply.  Informal groups must be represented by a responsible organization of bookkeeping agent to handle financial transactions.

The Board of Directors will award all grants.  Board members are Kentuckians who volunteer their time and expertise.

Project Requirements:  Each grant application will have a project director, humanities advisor, bookkeeper, and community support.  The Council requires grantees to match the grant request with at least a one-to-one match of cash or in-kind contributions.  In-kind contributions can be professional time, volunteer time, use of donated facilities and equipment, mailing costs, and the like.  Grantees must publicly credit the Kentucky Humanities Council and the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission for their support for a project.  Credit should be given verbally, in printed materials, and through the display of Council banners.

 

Grant Funds Available:  Minigrant funds awarded monthly beginning July 1, 2006 until funds are exhausted - $35,000; Major grant funds available for the November 2006 award date - $85,000; Major grant funds available for the April 2007 award date - $50,000.  Major grant funds available for award in November 2007 - $50,000, pending our request for additional federal matching funds.

 

Grant Amounts:  Major grants will range from $2,000 - $10,000.  Requests greater than $10,000 will be reviewed, but less likely to be competitive and funded in full.

 

Grant Periods:  Grant periods for major grants awarded at the end of November 2007 can begin no earlier than December 1, 2007.  Grant period for major grants awarded in April 2008 can begin no earlier than May 1, 2008. Grant period for major grants awarded in November 2008 can begin no earlier than December 1, 2008. Grant periods for minigrants can begin no earlier than eight weeks from the submission of the final proposal.  Grant period end dates should not exceed two years.
